The Letter I: Innovative

The driver of this Triumph TR3 frequently replaces its steering wheel with a Triumph bicycle handlebar.  He flashes a mischievous smile as he remarks that the handlebar steering system is great for straight line racing,  but not so well suited for the fourteen corners encountered at Road America.  I wonder if it would be an effective braking bias control since the left handbrake could operate the front brakes while the right would have separate control of the rear.  Hmmm.  Anyone inclined to pursue a patent for this innovation?   : )

  2. I’d check the calipers on those brakes.

  4. Hi Lois,
I can see his theory there. It would be kind of tricky going around corners. The brake idea sounds good but would it work. Have a great day!

I would think a hard turn would result in a bruised knee. I think the driver has to do this for attention rather than practicality, but I’m no car expert!

    • The handlebar is a gag that only decorates his car when it’s in the paddock. This driver is a highly regarded senior racer with a wonderful sense of humor which is appreciated by all and adds to the fun and enjoyment for racer and spectator alike. Vintage racing just wouldn’t be the same without his “frog blue” TR3 running down the track . . . with a triangular slow moving vehicle sign on its tail.

  8. HMMM…..maybe too much spare time on his hands.

  9. Perfectly shot and that is so clever! Does he stand aside and watch the double takes people must take?

  10. Must be for the entertainment factor and I’ll second the idea that he has altogether too much time on his hands…a harmless hobby tho!
