Photo a Day Challenge


As we understand the process, converted mash is piped to a lauter tun and then returned to the mash brew kettle. Boiled wort is piped to a cooler, yeast bin, fermenters and aging tanks.  The complex what-goes-where process was illustrated on a posted diagram and described by our guide in a very noisy environment, and this is the best explanation we can give.  (We could find wort and tun in the dictionary, but not lauter.)

    • This is a working brewery. They are quite proud to be the fourth oldest brewery in continuous operation in the United States.

Now here I can help…..cos I’m a qualified Brewer (from a past life)….your description of the process is correct….the Lauter tun is where the green wort is filtered off the mash and returned for boiling….this develops colour in the wort and strilises the wort before it is cooled and yeast added to ferment the hooped wort into beer.

  9. Meant to add…..lautering is effectively filtering….lauter is a German word loosely translated as ‘nothing but’ or ‘filter’
