I love to learn about how ordinary people–especially women–lived in other times and places. To me, being at this place made real the hardships these women endured as well as the simple ways they fought back against it (like sweeping and curtains.) This shot shows just how stark and harsh a place it was.

I like the way the warp leads the eye into the barn. This is like stepping back in time, love it.

Your photo really captures this part of my state wonderfully…I can feel the heat and the starkness of the living that is eked out here. I’m with Bobbie in her comment about the life of the women settlers and have always been amazed reading about their accounts in the self-written diaries. Having a baby one day and then immediately back to the hard work that was necessary to survive out here on the edge of nowhere.
