More than fifty ships have sunk in the Kohler-Andrae area, including an 87 ft. schooner named the Challenge, built in 1852. A section of the schooner’s keel washed ashore in 1982 and is on display in the park.

In July 1902, the partly decomposed body of the ship’s captain, William Ward, was found in the pilothouse that had been torn from the bulk and washed ashore at Baker Beach .
